I once had someone call me ‘the junk drawer of the school’ 🤔.

They meant it as a compliment, meaning I’m the catch-all, the glue that keeps it going. I was so overwhelmed at the time I didn’t think of it as a compliment, and honestly, it kind of annoyed me 😆 But I get what she meant now.

There’s a lot more to this job than many people realize. The role of a school counselor is often misunderstood and underappreciated.

Here are some things about school counselors that I wish others knew about the profession:
1️⃣ Wearing Many Hats: From career advice to emotional support, school counselors have a wide range of responsibilities that go beyond what most people see.

2️⃣ Not Just “Guidance Counselors”: The role has evolved far beyond just guiding academic paths; it now includes social-emotional learning, mental health support, and much more.

3️⃣ Educational Requirements: A Master’s degree and state licenses are generally required, reflecting the specialized skill set needed for the job.

4️⃣ The Isolation Factor: School counselors often work alone and don’t have a team of colleagues doing the same job, which can be isolating.

5️⃣ First Responders in Crisis: Whether it’s a mental health emergency or a critical family issue, school counselors are often the first point of contact (this varies by state and district).

6️⃣ Emotional Toll: Dealing with crises, emotional issues, and sometimes life-and-death situations can take a heavy emotional toll.

7️⃣ Confidentiality Complications: While part of the school community, counselors must also adhere to confidentiality rules, which can complicate communications with staff.

8️⃣ Ratios and Time Constraints: With high student-to-counselor ratios, managing time to give each student the attention they need is a constant challenge.

You are not doing anything wrong.

So many of the behaviors we are seeing right now are not about defiance or kids “not trying.” They are about children who do not yet have the tools to manage big feelings in real time.

That is not a character flaw.

It is a skill gap.

One small shift that can make a big difference is slowing things down before emotions spill over.

✨ Offering a simple choice
✨ Giving kids something concrete to do with their hands while their bodies calm

That is exactly why I created my calming strategy crafts. They take abstract coping skills and turn them into something kids can see, touch, and remember when emotions are high.

This activity helps students slow down and think about how their words, actions, and choices impact others. Not just in big moments, but in everyday classroom situations that come up again and again.

I love using this during counseling lessons, small groups, or anytime classroom dynamics need a reset. It creates meaningful conversations without putting kids on the spot or making anyone feel singled out.

I’m choosing new year, be here.

I want to slow down, be where my feet are, and really notice the moments that are passing by, the conversations, the curiosity, and the in-between moments that matter more than we realize.

That mindset keeps coming up as I think about our kids.

Career exploration doesn’t have to feel rushed or heavy. It can be thoughtful, playful, and rooted in who kids are right now, what they enjoy, what they’re curious about, and what lights them up.

That’s exactly how I design my career activities, focused on exploration, not pressure.

✨ Teaching kids what it really means to be a good

✨ Teaching kids what it really means to be a good citizen is one of my favorite lessons this time of year.

Because citizenship isn’t just about rules, it is about kindness, responsibility, and making your classroom or school a better place to be.

This activity is a student favorite.
Kids sort examples of “Good Citizens” and “Citizens Who Need to Try Harder,” which opens the door to meaningful conversations like…

✔ “What does respect look like?”
✔ “How do our choices affect other people?”
✔ “What can we do differently next time?”

The hands-on sorting cards, visual examples, and discussion prompts make it easy to help children connect the dots between behavior and impact. And honestly, it is such a powerful way to build community, teamwork, and empathy.
