What’s Under the Mask?

Let’s face it. Masks aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. It’s important to teach our students how to read body language and social cues to figure out the emotions of others, without being able to see their full faces.

Kids need facial feedback from grown-ups to know that they are on the right track. Often students look to educators and adults for a quick approving smile to know they are doing the right thing and their adults are happy with them. This is difficult with masks obstructing the face.

In the world of masks covering half our faces, it can be really hard for kids to know how others are feeling. Without being able to rely on facial cues, kids can misinterpret the feelings and emotions of others. It’s a different world than they’ve previously known, it’s our job to teach them how to adapt to it.

This Google Slides™ resource is designed to help kids practice reading body language and eye expressions to determine emotions in others. There are 101 slides included that challenge students to write or drag and drop their answers as they point out body language to identify how others may be feeling. Feel free to use all slides, or modify the slide count to fit your student’s needs.
