5 Ways School Counselors Can Reach More Students Utilizing the School News

Have you ever thought of how the school news can help you to reach more students? As a school counselor, you play a crucial role in helping students develop social-emotional skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

However, reaching all students can be a challenge, especially if you have a large caseload or limited time. One effective way to reach more students is by using the school news.

School News Benefits

Using the school news can have many benefits for students, including:

  • Reaching a larger audience of students who may not utilize counseling services
  • Providing opportunities for classroom discussion and reflection, which can deepen students’ understanding of themselves and others
  • Encouraging positive behaviors and attitudes that can improve school culture and promote a sense of community
  • Teaching skills that can help build self-esteem and confidence
  • Fostering a sense of belonging which can improve students’ mental health and overall well-being.

Utilizing the school news can also help students become familiar with the school counselor’s face, which is crucial for building relationships, establishing trust, and providing support and guidance.

When students see the school counselor as someone who cares about their well-being, they are more likely to seek support when needed.

School News = Reaching More Students

Here are some ways that you can use the school news to reach more students and help to improve their life skills:

Quote of the Day

Sharing a daily quote that promotes positive attitudes and behaviors can be a simple yet effective way to inspire and motivate students. Starting the day with a positive and insightful quote can lead to many thought-provoking discussions.

Gratitude Practice of the Day

Practicing gratitude can help students develop a positive attitude and a sense of perspective. Sharing a daily prompt that encourages students to reflect on what they’re grateful for can help cultivate this important skill.

Calming Strategy of the Day

In today’s fast-paced and stressful world, it’s essential for students to learn how to manage their emotions and find a sense of calm. Sharing a daily (or weekly) calming strategy can help students develop these important skills.

Not all calming strategies work for all students. Exposing children to a new strategy daily allows for a chance to try out various strategies until they find the strategies that work best for them.

Career of the Month

Helping students explore potential career paths can motivate them to work hard and plan for their futures. Highlighting a different career each month can help students learn about different industries and the skills needed to succeed in them.

Fun Fact of the Day

Sharing a daily fun fact can spark students’ curiosity and interest in a variety of topics. This can help motivate them to learn and explore new things.

Sharing fun and interesting facts can help you to build rapport with students and strengthen relationships.

In Summary, Use the School News.

Using the school news can be a powerful tool for school counselors who want to reach more students and improve their social-emotional skills.

By sharing a variety of daily prompts and highlighting student accomplishments, school counselors can help students develop important skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Appearing on the school news may seem intimidating at first and like too much of a time commitment. To get around that, I met with students on Friday and filmed all five segments for the upcoming week.

With today’s technology, they are able to slice and edit the footage and are able to slide each clip into the daily morning news segment. Filming in bulk makes appearing on the school news daily much more realistic and achievable.
