Implementing a meet-the-counselor lesson at the beginning of the school year can be a game changer for new school counselors. It takes time to build relationships with students and staff. That’s where meet the counselor lessons can make all the difference in getting to know your students, building rapport, and making your roles and responsibilities as the school counselor known to all.
The more aware you make students of your services, the more likely they are to utilize them. Below are four fun and interactive meet-the-counselor activities you can use to introduce yourself and your counseling program to your students and staff.
Meet the Counselor Activities
School News Intro
The most time-efficient way to introduce yourself to a large number of students at once is by utilizing the school news. The start of the school year is often so busy and hectic. It might not be feasible to make your way through all classrooms during the first month of school. This can be a fun way for students to see your face and start to get to know you.
Save time, resources, and energy by introducing yourself once, in a format all students have access to. A perfect example would be the school news station.
We use the school news to outline our responsibilities and quickly summarize our roles as counselors. Briefly, we described our counseling services/program. We gave kids the highlights of what makes our program so awesome. We then solidified that thought during our classroom counseling lessons!
Using that school news lets you ensure students know who you are and what you do!
Here is the teaser clip I created for the school new this year. We wanted to get students excited for us to come into their classrooms. I thought this little trailer would be perfect! I made it in Canva, which was much easier than I thought it would be.
You can create a video like the one above or show up live and speak directly to students. Either way, when you use the school news as a tool to promote your counseling program, you can’t go wrong!
Superpowers Classroom Counseling Lesson
Tell a kid you have superpowers, and they are instantly hooked on your every word. Introduce yourself as the new super school counselor. Describe your services as superpowers, and you will make a ton of new little friends.
I do this school counselor’s superpowers meet the counselor lesson with grades K-5, but grades one-three are my favorite. They are the most excited about learning about superpowers.
I tell my students that as the school counselor, I have superpowers that help me to be great at my job.
School Counselors have the power to:
- Help you solve problems.
- Help you deal with life changes.
- Remind you how special you are.
- Listen to your problems and concerns.
- Help you make and keep friends.
- Teacher you about career options.
Kids won’t forget who you are and what you do. Especially if they think you are an undercover superhero running around campus! I like to go all out and wear a cape and mask. It’s fun to dress up and be super extra once in a while.
This is one unforgettable super-powered meet-the-counselor activity.
There is also a digital version of the school counselor’s superpowers. This meet-the-counselor activity is now available for students participating in virtual learning.
This digital download allows you to introduce yourself and give a meet-the-counselor lesson regardless of the child’s mode of learning.
To elevate this lesson, you can add on my new kid’s book, A Chameleon’s Guide to School Counseling! It’s now available on Amazon and is perfect for your meet-your-counselor lessons.
You can read this to your class or use it alongside my school counselor’s superpowers lesson.
Mr. Potato Head
Using the pieces of a Mr. Potato Head (and even dressing like him, too) is a great way to explain the pieces of a school counselor’s job to our younger students.
Pick pieces of Mr. Potato Head out of the bucket one by one and explain each piece as follows:
- Ears – Your School Counselor uses their ears to listen to your problems and concerns.
- Eyes – School Counselors use their eyes to look out for students and to spot ways to fix problems.
- Mouth – School Counselors do not spread your secrets to other people
- Arms/Hands – School Counselors use their arms to give big hugs and their hands to help guide you in the right direction
- Feet – School Counselors use their feet to travel around campus, helping to solve problems.
I then give students a coloring activity from one of my meet the counselor lessons. They can work on this while you walk around the class, getting to know the students.
Fishing Trip
Another classroom counseling lesson you can do to help students meet the counselor involves taking your students on a fishing trip.
Okay, you can’t really deck your students out in the latest fishing gear and take them on a deep-sea fishing trip. However, you can bring a (very) small pond, some plastic fishing rods, and your responsibilities as a school counselor to their classrooms.
Students will have a blast as they fish for scenarios, deciding if each one is a good catch for the school counselor.
Meet the Counselor
No matter how you go about it, students will love having you come into their classrooms and introduce your role as their school counselor. It is important that students know who you are and how you can best help them at school.
Meet the counselor lessons are the perfect way to become known on campus.
