Calm Down Spin the Wheel Activity

Often, I have little ones that stop by my office who are super upset and do not yet have the skills to express themselves clearly. The lack of ability to communicate their feelings leads to further frustration and anger.

This is where the calm-down-spin-the-wheel activity comes in.

Students are able to spin and land on a calm down strategy. They then have to try out that calm down strategy. If it works and helps them to find their calm, great. If not, they spin again and repeatedly try various calm down strategies until they find one that works.

If that doesn’t work, as a last resort, the spinner has this cool mesmerizing effect that catches kids off guard and distracts them into a sense of calm.

Often, I like to have interactive activities like this in my office to help kids stay engaged while they visit me. As a result, I have a lot of students coming to my office instead of losing their cool in class. This is a quick use tool that is sure to get a kid calm and back to learning.

Once calm, I invite the student to explore my Zen Zone or to reflect and regulate their behavior.

I would love to see these in classrooms next to calm down corners so students who do not know how to calm themselves, have a place to get started. However, I am curious as to how you would use these?
